Jewish Southerner transforms 60 years of Bible Belt residency into political thriller novel
ATLANTA, Ga.— According to author Mickey Dubrow “Many people believe that America either is a Christian nation or should be. To be a true Christian nation, America would have to become a theocracy.”
In his timely debut novel, “American Judas,” to be released by Newnan, Georgia based publisher SFK Press, Dubrow illustrates how America can’t be both a theocracy and a democracy without erasing the freedom we cherish.
“I was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. According to the American Bible Society, Chattanooga is the most Bible-minded city in the U.S. There were times when I experienced what happens when the wall between church and state is ignored,” Dubrow said.
“One of my junior high school teachers required students to read from the New Testament before class. My high school scheduled events in the auditorium where preachers witnessed to the students about Christianity. My Jewish faith was occasionally challenged and I was asked why I didn’t believe in God,” Dubrow said.
“Dubrow’s novel isn’t anti-Christian—it is pro-freedom of religion,” SFK Press publisher Steve McCondichie said. “What makes the lead character heroic is not only his stance against tyranny but the motives for his bravery—an innate desire to freely exercise the religion of his ancestors as guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.”
“American Judas” is a dystopian tale about a young couple’s life after opportunistic U.S. politicians abolish separation between Church and State. Seth and Maggie Ginsberg do their best to navigate an oppressive theocracy where fundamental Christianity is the only legal religion, and abortion, homosexuality, and adultery are outlawed. When a co-worker outs Seth as a Jew, Seth escapes to Mexico, but Maggie is sent to a Savior Camp. “American Judas” mixes political satire, suspense, and family drama, and explores, among other possibilities, lost faith in America and what this might mean for the freedoms we hold dear.

Praise for “American Judas”:
“Mickey Dubrow is not about subtlety—he sends us an angry roar against unholy hypocrisy. In the pages of this dystopia, the National Church of Christ makes sure the American way stays straight and narrow … by cruelly reforming homosexuals, drug addicts, adulterers, Satan worshipers, and Liberals. The message of American Judas is like watching a naked National Church choir: The pious hymns will never reach the angels, because the chubby, sweating bodies belong to animals.”
—Charles McNair, author “Land O’ Goshen,” “Pickett’s Charge,” and “The Epicureans”
“Part mystery, part dystopia, American Judas is satiric and stinging. Set in a future when the American way is “God and guns” and inspectors invade your privacy to verify your faith, this novel cuts awfully close to home. It is as provocative as ‘The Handmaid’s Tale,’ and just as important to read.”
—Anthony Grooms, author of “The Vain Conversation” and “Bombingham”
